How much does eBay take from a sale?
On most items eBay takes 13.6% of the sale total plus $0.40 an order. On a $100.00 sale with free shipping that is $14.00, and you keep $86.00.

Fees on common sale prices
For a seller without a Store, in a category that pays the standard rate, and in good standing. The left side has free shipping and no sales tax. The right side adds $10.00 shipping and 8% sales tax, which eBay counts as part of the sale.
| Item price | eBay takes | You keep | Share of price | With shipping and tax: takes | You keep |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| $10.00 | $1.66 | $8.34 | 16.6% | $3.34 | $16.66 |
| $25.00 | $3.80 | $21.20 | 15.2% | $5.54 | $29.46 |
| $50.00 | $7.20 | $42.80 | 14.4% | $9.21 | $50.79 |
| $100.00 | $14.00 | $86.00 | 14% | $16.56 | $93.44 |
| $250.00 | $34.40 | $215.60 | 13.76% | $38.59 | $221.41 |
| $500.00 | $68.40 | $431.60 | 13.68% | $75.31 | $434.69 |
“You keep” is what eBay pays out for the item and shipping you charged. The sales tax goes to the state and is not yours, so it never shows in your payout. Your item cost and shipping label come off after this.
Why small sales cost a bigger share
The $0.40 per-order fee is the same on every order, so it weighs more on a cheap item. On a $10.00 item the total fee is 16.6% of the price. On a $500.00 item it is 13.68%.
Why shipping and tax raise the fee
eBay charges its percentage on the total the buyer pays, not only the item price. On the $100.00 sale above, adding $10.00 shipping and 8% tax lifts the fee from $14.00 to $16.56.
What else can add to the fee
A Store can lower the percentage in many categories, Promoted Listings add an ad fee you choose, and some sellers pay a surcharge. See every eBay fee in one place, or put your own numbers in the eBay fee calculator.
